Fairies so small they can hardly be seen, except for the laughing child within. Fairies so happy and kind, so gentle and wild, so go on and dance my wild fairy child.

Felted Wool Art

Felted wool art is indeed a  very special art.

While I intended to create a felted broch it eventually turned into something entirely different. Subsequently my felted wool art needed a frame rather than a pin.

My creations of felted wool art emerged with the intention of opening the mind to discover the true value of wool in the felted form.

The process is simple, nonetheless the work may not.

My starting point is a rough sketch on paper, even though I mostly change the design somewhat during the wool composition.

Firstly, I select my colours for the outline of the backdrop, after that I add the finer details. This could involve not only wool, but also silk, threads, and other fabrics.

During the layout of the artwork, I need to stabilize the wool. For that reason, I add small amounts of water to weight down the fibres, with the intention to stop the wool from distorting.

Then, adding more soapy warm water, I begin the felting process by agitating the wool.

At this point, I need a pinch of good luck as I only get one chance to get it right.

Elbow crease coupled with patience, wet felting wool is hard work and time-consuming.

But equally, so rewarding.

At the end I wash the felted wool piece in a vinegar and water solution for the purpose of keeping the colours bright and vibrant.

In due time,  once the felted wool is dry. I add more depth using free-motion embroidery with complementary coloured threads. Some aspects are done by hand as no machine would be able to achieve the desired outcome.

By and large. I use 18 micron merino wool. Unquestionably mulesing free.

Each felted wool art is shipped worldwide unframed. Framed artwork is only available within Ireland.

I love the fact that my raw material is growing naturally. It only needs grass, water, shelter and occasional TLC.

‘ To You I Am’ is a text fragment of one of my all-time favourite books. The little prince. By Antoine De Saint- Exupery. The fox plays his part in the story, and I like to think that my visions of my art are stories too. Told through the eye of the beholder.
